  • The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on September 19, 2020, approved the commercial launch of ‘Feluda’, India’s first TATA CRISPER (Clustered Regulatory Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) COVID-19 test. The Tata Group’s CRISPR COVID test has been named after Satyajit Ray’s iconic character ‘Feluda’.
  • Indian Railways is observing “Swachhta Pakhwara” from 16th to 30th September 2020.
  • In a first-of-its-kind initiative, eight beaches of India have been recommended for the Blue flag certification.
  • What is Blue Flag certification? The Blue Flag certificate is an internationally recognized eco-label given by ‘Foundation for Environment Education, Denmark’. The eight beaches selected for Blue flag certification are- Shivrajpur in Gujarat, Ghoghla in Daman & Diu, Kasarkod in Karnataka, Padubidri beach in Karnataka, Kappad in Kerala, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh, The golden beach of Odisha, Radhanagar beach in Andaman and Nicobar
  • In a historic first, two women officers have been selected to join as “Observers” (Airborne Tacticians) in the helicopter stream of the Indian Navy. The two women officers who will create history in the Indian Naval Aviation include-Sub Lieutenant (SLt) Kumudini Tyagi and SLt Riti Singh.
  • Fitch Solutions has revised downward its forecast for Indian economic growth and now estimates that India’s GDP will contract by 8.6% in 2020-21 (FY21).
  • A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Ministry of AYUSH and Ministry of Women and Child Development to control Malnutrition as a part of POSHAN Abhiyaan.

  • World Bank released the report titled “The Human Capital Index 2020 Update: Human Capital in the Time of COVID-19”. India has been ranked at the 116th position among 174 countries in the Human Capital Index 2020. Top 3 Human Capital Index 2020: 1 Singapore, 2 Hongkong and China, 3 Japan
  • Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Vaishwik Bharatiya Vaigyanik (VAIBHAV) Summit on 2nd October’2020 through video conferencing.
  • Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited (HOCL), a PSU under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has been granted Bureau of Indian Standards – BIS certification for all its products.
  • PM Modi launches “Ghar Tak Fibre” scheme in Bihar. These services are to be executed along with combined efforts of Common Service Centre.
  • Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has been awarded the Ig Nobel Prize 2020 for Medical Education.
  • Airbus is planning to launch World’s first Commercial Hydrogen aircraft by 2035. The aviation company launched three concepts for the first zero-emission commercial aircraft on September 21, 2020.
  • The International Day of Peace was observed this year on September 21st with the theme- Shaping Peace Together.
  • Novak Djokovic has defeated Argentine Diego Schwartzman, 7-6, 5-3, to win 2020 Men’s Single Italian Open title and his fifth overall Rome title.
  • In Women’s single, Simona Halep defeated champion Karolina Pliskova, 6-0, 2-1, to win her first Italian Open title.
  • The International Red Panda Day (IRPD) is celebrated on third Saturday of September every year to raise public awareness and support for red panda conservation issues.
  • India and the Maldives have launched the first-ever direct Cargo Ferry Service on 21 September 2020 to boost trade between the two countries. The cargo ferry service will connect the Indian ports of Tuticorin and Cochin ports with Kulhudhuhfushi and Male ports in the Maldives.
  • The Union Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh has unveiled the Logo and song for festival “Destination North East-2020” (The Emerging Delightful Destinations) through a video conference. The four-day event is to be formally inaugurated by Home Minister Amit Shah on September 27, 2020.
  • Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha launched the National Generic Document Registration System for the union territory. The system has so far been adopted in three states namely Punjab, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Six more states and union territories such as Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Bihar, Manipur, Jharkhand and Mizoram are moving towards the system.
  • The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved the proposal to appoint Simanchala Dash as an advisor to Executive Director, International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington.
  • The central government is planning to set up India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) at Bodi West Hills in the Theni district, Tamil Nadu.The INO will be a world-class underground laboratory with a rock cover that will study the neutrinos produced in the atmosphere of the Earth.
  • Madhya Pradesh government has announced ‘Mukhya Mantri Kisan Kalyan Yojana’ on the lines of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi.
  • The Indian Navy (IN) has commenced a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in the East Indian Ocean Region.
  • World Rhino Day is observed globally on 22 September every year.
  • United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has predicted that the GDP of India will contract by 5.9% in the year 2020.
  • The Maharashtra state government had launched the ‘My Family My Responsibility’ campaign on September 15 to reach out to every family residing in Mumbai.
  • Time Magazine has released the TIME 100 Most Influential People List 2020. Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi is the only politician on the list. The following Indians have also been named in this list: Professor Ravindra Gupta (Pioneer), is a Professor of Clinical Microbiology and has worked for the cure of HIV, Ayushmann Khurrana (Artists), Bilkis (Icons), the ‘Dadi from Shaheen Bagh’.
  • A 17-year-old girl, Khushi Chindaliya has been appointed as Regional Ambassador for India by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)- Tunza Eco-Generation.
  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has conducted a successful flight test of ABHYAS, a High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) from the Interim Test Range, Balasore in Odisha.
  • A hackathon named “KRITAGYA” has been planned by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP).
  • The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal has launched the “Mukhyamantrir Grammya Paribahan Achoni Yojana” of the state transport department.

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and NITI Aayog will organize a summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI), RAISE 2020- ‘Responsible AI for Social Empowerment 2020′ from October 5-9, 2020.
  • The United Kingdom and the United Nations are going to co-organise a global climate summit on December 12, 2020, to mark the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015.
  • The 51st Edition of the International Film Festival of India, IFFI will be held from 16th to 24th January, next year in Goa.
  • The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath has launched a unified portal called ‘U-Rise’. Uttar Pradesh is the first state to launch such a unified portal along with the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020.
  • Flight Lieutenant, Shivangi Singh to become the first woman fighter pilot of India to fly the Rafale combat aircraft that was formally inducted into the Indian Air Force(IAF) September 10, 2020. She is one of the 10 Indian women fighter pilots in IAF.
  • According to the World Risk Index (WRI) 2020, India has been ranked at the 89th spot among 181 Countries. WRI has been developed in cooperation with the United Nations University’s Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNUEHS) and calculated by the International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV).
  • Kerala has won the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases Awards 2020 for its “outstanding contribution” towards the non-communicable diseases-related sustainable development goals.
  • World Environmental Health Day is observed globally on 26th September every year. This day is celebrated to shed the light on important work of environmental health around the world. The Theme for the 2020 World Environmental Health Day: Environmental health, a key public health intervention in disease pandemic prevention.
  • India observes Antyodaya Diwas on 25th September every year. This day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
